Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor is the site of the first lighthouse in the United States. At the beginning of the Revolution, American troops darkened the lantern to avoid signalling British vessels. The British destroyed the original beacon, built in 1716, as they evacuated Boston in 1775. The current conical tower is the last manned lighthouse in the United States.
