Architects encased the Chicago Harbor lighthouse and tower in steel to help withstand the bitter Lake Michigan winters, and ingeniously designed a residence within the tower. Its third-order Fresnel lens, originally intended for the Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, was displayed at the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.
